- An element which describes an accessory for an organ, console, keyboard or division.

- An attribute which may be used in the Source
element to specify the name of the article for sources which are periodicals.
- artist
- An attribute which may be used in the Recording
and Source elements to specify the name of
the recording artist.
- author
- An attribute which may be used in the Remark
and Source elements to specify the author.

- Bibliography
- To specify a bibliography for an OrganSpec, use the
Source element.
- Blower
- An element which describes a blower.
- Borrowed
- An element which is used to describe partial borrowing between stops.
If a stop is entirely borrowed from another stop, use instead the
"borrowed" attribute of the Stop element.

- An attribute which may be used in the Stop
element to indicate a stop which is entirely borrowed from another stop.
For partial borrowing, use the Borrowed
element instead.

- An element which describes an organ builder.

elements to identify the organ builder.

- An attribute which must be used in the Revision
element to specify the name of the person who made the revision.

- To describe a calcant control, use the

- An element which describes the externally visible casework of an organ.
- catalog
- An attribute which is used in the CatalogID element
to identify the catalog in which the CatalogID has meaning.
- CatalogID
- An element which specifies a catalog ID for use within specific
sites or databases to identify an organ.
- cfm
- An attribute used in the Blower element
to describe the CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating.
- Chamber
- An element which describes an organ chamber, typically (but not necessarily)
enclosed behind swell shades.

- An attribute which must be used in the SwellPedal
element to indicate what the swell pedal controls.
- city
- An attribute which may be used in the Builder
or Location element to list the city or town.
- Comments
- (1) To include a comment in an OrganSpec, use the
Remark element.
(2) Comments and suggestions from reviewers of the OrganSpec standard
may be found here.

- An attribute which is used in the Borrowed,
Division, Keyboard,
and Stop elements to describe a range of notes.

- An element which describes the composition of a mixture.
- Console
- An element which describes a Console.
- control
- An attribute which may be used in the Accessory,
Coupler and Stop
elements to specify the type of control used for the component.
- country
- An attribute which may be used in the Builder
or Location element to list the country.
For older instruments, this should be the name of the country at the
time of the installation, not the name of the country at the time the
specification was prepared.
The value of the attribute must be either the fully spelled country
name (e.g. "United States of America") or the two-letter ISO country
code (e.g. "us").

- An element which represents a coupler.
- couplers
- An attribute which may be used in the Console
element to describe the type of coupler controls used.
- Crescendo
- To describe a crescendo pedal, use the
Accessory element.
- Cymbelstern
- To describe a cymbelstern, use the
Accessory element.

- date
- An attribute which may appear in certain elements
to specify a date.
- dateFormat
- An attribute which must appear in the Organ
element to specify how dates are to be formatted.

- dateInstalled
- An attribute which is used in most elements; it contains the date of installation
of the component described by the parent element.
Except for the Organ element,
the "dateInstalled" attribute should only be used for things added
after the original installation.
- dateRemoved
- An attribute which is used in most elements; it contains the date of removal
of the component described by the parent element.
Except for the Organ element,
the "dateRemoved" attribute should only be used for things removed
before the entire instrument was removed or destroyed.
- divided
- An attribute which may be used in the Keyboard
element to indicate a divided keyboard.
- Divided Keyboard
- Divided or split keyboards may be represented in a number of ways.
You can use the "divided" attribute of the Keyboard
element to specify the split point.
In the Stop element, you can set the "compass" attribute
to "L" or "R" to indicate the left or right side of the keyboard.
You can place two Division elements inside a
Keyboard element to contain the left and right
Stop elements.
- Division
- An element which represents a division; that is, a group of stops or rank.

- doubleDraw
- An attribute which may be used in the Stop
element to describe a double-draw stop.
- DTD
- Acronym for Document Type Definition, a file which defines
the elements, attributes and entities.
The OrganSpec DTD can be found here.

- EM
- An element representing emphasized text (as in HMTL).
It may be used only within a Remark element.
- enclosed
- An attribute which may appear in the Chamber,
Division or Keyboard
element to indicate whether the component is enclosed behind swell shades.
- end
- An attribute which may appear in the History
element to indicate the ending date of a historical event.
- Entities
- These are constructs for representing accented characters and other
special symbols.
- Expression Pedal
- See SwellPedal.
- extension
- An attribute which may be used in the Stop
element to indicate a stop which is an extension of another stop.

- Floating Division
- To represent a floating division, use the Division
element.
- format
- An attribute which may be used in the Recording
element to specify the recording format (CD, LP, cassette, etc.).
- freqA
- An attribute which may be used in the Tuning
element to specify the frequency of A above middle C.
- from
- (1) An attribute which is used in the Borrowed
element to indicate which stop or rank is being borrowed from.
(2) An attribute which is used in the Coupler
element to indicate the "from" keyboard or division.
(3) An attribute which is used in the MixtureRank
element to indicate the starting note for the rank.
- fromSpecial
- An attribute which is used in the Coupler
element to indicate something other than a simple "from" division,
such as "MIDI", "Swell Reeds", "Enclosed Great", etc.

- History
- An element which represents some historical event associated with the organ.
Much of the history of an instrument can be represented by using the
dateInstalled and dateRemoved attributes instead.

- hp
- An attribute used in the Blower element
to describe the horsepower rating.
- Hyperlinks
- Hyperlinks may be included within Remark elements.
- id
- This attribute may appear in nearly every element, and is used to uniquely
identify the element within the OrganSpec so that the element may be
referenced unambiguously from another element. The value of the "id"
attribute is never displayed when converting an OrganSpec to human-readable
form.
- installedBy
- An attribute which is used in most elements; it contains the id of
the builder who installed the component described by the parent element.
Except for the Organ element,
the "installedBy" attribute should only be used for things added
after the original installation.
- ISBN
- An attribute used in the Source element
to list the ISBN number of a book.
- issue
- An attribute used in the Source element
to list the issue of a periodical.

- KeyAction
- An element which describes the key action.
- Keyboard
- An element which represents a keyboard on a console.

- keyboard
- An attribute which may be used with the Division
element to specify the keyboard with which the division is associated.
- label
- (1) An attribute which may be used in certain elements
to describe the exact label that appears on the actual
console or component in the organ. Compare with "name".
(2)An attribute which may be used in the
Recording
element to specify the name of the recording label.
- language
- An attribute which must be used in the Remark
element to specify the language of the remark.
- Location
- An element which describes the location of an organ.

- maker
- An attribute which may be used in the Rank,
Stop and Trap elements
to list the name of the maker of the component.
- manufacturer
- An attribute which may be used in the Blower and
Relay elements
to list the name of the manufacturer of the component.
- material
- An attribute which may be used in the Rank and
Stop elements
to list the material from which the pipes are made.
- MixtureRank
- An element which describes one rank in a mixture.
- name
- An attribute which may be used (and is usually required) in certain elements
to describe the complete, unabbreviated name of the component.
This may be different from how the component is actually labelled;
compare with "label".
- Note Names
- The standard for spelling note names can be found here.
- notes
- An attribute which may be used with the Division
and Keyboard
elements to specify the number of notes in the division.

- opus
- An attribute which may appear in the Builder
element to list the builder's opus number.
- order
- The ordering of elements in an OrganSpec does not convey any information,
and is not guaranteed to be maintained. The "order" attribute may be
used in certain elements to specify an ordering; usually the order in
which controls appear on the console. This ordering should be observed
when converting an OrganSpec to human-readable form.
- Organ
- An element which describes one entire organ; the topmost element in
the OrganSpec hierarchy.
- OrganSpec
- A document containing an organ specification which is formatted
according to the OrganSpec standard.
- page
- An attribute used in the Source element
to specify one or more page numbers.
- pipes
- An attribute used in the Rank and
Stop elements to specify the number
of pipes in the rank.
- pitch
- An attribute which is used in the Coupler,
MixtureRank, Rank,
and Stop elements to specify the pitch of the component.
- position
- An attribute used in the Keyboard element
to specify the physical position of the keyboard.
- Pressure
- An element which specifies a wind pressure.
- publisher
- An attribute which may be used in the Source
element to specify the publisher.
- R -
- Rank
- An element which represents a single rank of pipes.
This element may be omitted in simple specifications, where the
Stop element may represent both the
stop and its corresponding rank of pipes.
In more complex specifications, stops and ranks must be specified
independently.
- rank
- An attribute which may be used in the Stop
element to indicate the Rank element
for the rank controlled by the stop.
- ranks
- An attribute which may be used in the Stop
element to indicate the number of ranks.
- Recording
- An element which represents an audio recording of the organ.
- Relay
- An element which represents a relay in a theatre or other unit organ.
- Remark
- An element which contains a textual remark about the parent element.
Remarks may appear almost anywhere in an OrganSpec.
- removedBy
- An attribute which is used in most elements; it contains the id of
the builder who removed the component described by the parent element.
Except for the Organ element,
the "installedBy" attribute should only be used for things removed
before the entire instrument was removed or destroyed.
- Reversible
- To describe a "reversible" control (typically used for couplers), use the
Accessory element.
- Revision
- An element which describes an addition or correction to an OrganSpec.
It conveys no information about the organ itself.
- Revision History
- The revision history for an OrganSpec is represented through the
use of the Revision element.
The revision history for the OrganSpec XML standard may be found
here.
- rpm
- An attribute used in the Blower element
to list the RPM (revolutions per minute) rating.
- S -
- Scale
- An element which contains pipe scaling information.
- serial
- An attribute used in the Blower element
to list the serial number of the blower.
- Sforzando
- To describe a sforzando or tutti control, use the
Accessory element.
- Source
- An element which cites a bibliographic reference for the OrganSpec.
- Split Keyboard
- See Divided Keyboard.
- start
- An attribute which must appear in the History
element to indicate the starting date of a historical event.
- state
- An attribute which may be used in the Builder
or Location element to list the state, province
or region.
- Stop
- An element which represents one stop on the organ.
It may also represent the rank(s) controlled by the stop,
or the rank may be specified independently using the
Rank element.
- StopAction
- An element which describes the type of stop action used in an organ
or division.
- stops
- An attribute which may be used in the Console
element to describe the type of stop controls used.
- Swell Box
- A swell box may be described in a number of ways.
- SwellPedal
- An element which represents a swell or expression pedal.
For crescendo pedals, use Accessory instead.
- T -
- temperament
- An attribute which may be used in the Tuning
element to specify the temperament.
- title
- An attribute which may be used in the Recording
and Source elements to specify the title of the
recording, book, or whatever. If the source is a periodical, this is the
name of the periodical, and the title of the article should be placed in
the "article" attribute.
- to
- (1) An attribute used in the Coupler element
to specify the "to" manual.
(2) An attribute which is used in the MixtureRank
element to indicate the ending note for the rank.
- Trap
- An element which represents a trap (percussion or sound effect) on a theatre organ.
- Tuning
- An element which represents the pitch and/or temperament of an organ.
- Tutti
- To describe a tutti or sforzando control, use the
Accessory element.
- type
- (1) An attribute used in the Coupler element to
specify the type of coupler.
(2) An attribute used in the Rank and
Stop elements to specify the type of rank, e.g. flue, reed, etc.
(3) An attribute used in the Relay element to
describe the type of relay.
- U V W X Y Z -
- units
- An attribute which must appear in the Pressure
element to specify the unit of measurement (inches or millimeters).
- url
- An attribute which may be used in the Source
element to specify the URL of the source.

- value
- An attribute which must appear in the Pressure
element to specify the pressure value.
- version
- An attribute which must appear in the Organ
element to specify the version of the OrganSpec standard to which
the Organ element (and all of its contents) conforms.
Future versions of the OrganSpec standard are not guaranteed to be fully
backward-compatible with earlier versions.
This version number allows software to determine the appropriate version
of the OrganSpec standard and handle the OrganSpec data accordingly.
- voltage
- An attribute used in the Blower element
to list the voltage rating.
- Wind Pressure
- To specify wind pressure, use the Pressure
element.
- XML
- An acronym for "eXtensible Markup Language", a standard on which
the OrganSpec standard is based.
